Fuga dai Piombi - Giacomo Casanova - häftad 9781537161679
The Venetian Inquisition court condemned Casanova to the Doge’s prison for an undisclosed term in 1755. Like many prisoners before him, the walk to his dreaded cell took him across the Bridge of Sighs. The Bridge of Sighs On 12 September 1755, Casanova was sentenced without trial to five years in prison, where he was placed in solitary confinement for the first part of his stay. It was said he was put in “the worst of all the cells,” where he suffered from fleas. The fashionable young man-about-town was arrested by the Venetian secret police in 1755 for making blasphemous jokes and thrown into its attic cells. The spurious charge was evidently trumped up by one of the elderly Venetian magistrates, who were enraged that Casanova was courting his mistress.

The fashionable young man-about-town was arrested by the Venetian secret police in 1755 for making blasphemous jokes and thrown into its attic cells. The spurious charge was evidently trumped up by one of the elderly Venetian magistrates, who were enraged that Casanova was courting his mistress. On 25 July 1755, Casanova was captured and taken to the Palazzo Ducale prison in Venice. The “Council of X” imprisoned him for his libertine behaviour, and they gave him a place in a cell known as “Piombi”, which was covered with lead plates. Giacomo Girolamo Casanova was born in Venice in 1725 to actress Zanetta Farussi, wife of actor and dancer Gaetano Casanova.Giacomo was the first of six children, being followed by Francesco Giuseppe (1727–1803), Giovanni Battista (1730–1795), Faustina Maddalena (1731–1736), Maria Maddalena Antonia Stella (1732–1800), and Gaetano Alvise (1734–1783). It depicts the salon of Madame Geoffrin in 1755, two years before Casanova’s second visit to France which is the setting of ‘Casanova Shadows’. Madame Geoffrin was a wealthy businesswoman, socialite and noted patron of the arts.
